A L I E N I N V A D E R S
Program by Darrell Spice
Text by Fender Tucker
Computing sure has changed in the past 15 years. What used to be
considered cool is now obsolete -- or worse, has been totally forgotten. I
think this great game from the early days of computing may be one of those
we've forgotten all about, and I'm glad that Howard Halasz of Houston TX
dug it up and sent it to me.
The name of the game used to be SPACE INVADERS and back in the early
80s it was all the rage. Businessmen in $1000 suits used to spend hours
blasting alien spaceships when they should have been foreclosing on widows.
It was back before the Internet and money wasn't the name of the game then.
Fun was. Play a few rounds of ALIEN INVADERS and see if it doesn't
transport you back a decade or two.
THE GAME
--------
ALIEN INVADERS is one of those games that doesn't need instructions.
Just shoot as many invaders as you can as they slowly (and inexorably) move
down the screen. Hide behind your barricades while you can and try not to
lose your four ships.
The best way to play ALIEN INVADERS is with a joystick in Port #2. Use
it to move your ship right and left and the firebutton to fire. If you
don't have a joystick, or prefer the keyboard, you can use the F key to
fire, and the 1 and 3 keys on the keypad to move right and left.
NOTE: The screen instructions says to use the 2 key for right. That's
wrong. The 3 key moves your ship right.
You may press P during the game to pause the action. You may also press
+ or - (plus or minus) to increase/decrease the game speed. The faster
speeds are truly only for INVADERS experts.
NOTE: The game is unplayable at 20 MHz. You can leave your SuperCPU at 20
MHz if you want, but I recommend flipping the speed switch to Normal.
Your best high score for the session is kept and displayed on the
screen.
FINAL THOUGHTS
--------------
Without the source codes I was unable to add anything to the game, like
the ability to return to LOADSTAR when you quit, but even with the game
just as it is, ALIEN INVADERS is one of the best early knock-offs I've ever
seen. Until we got all serious this is what we used computers for. I
greatly appreciate that Darrell Spice and Howard Halasz have given us the
opportunity to travel back to the 80s one more time.
